About Me:
I'm from Newfoundland and live in Montreal. I'm first up a songwriter and guitarist, of a more philosophical and dark nature, with a background in messy, artsy punk and experimental indie rock. I play guitar, bass, drums, accordion, and I sing. Solo, I write what I describe as "songs for a solitary road trip", or "love letters from the underbelly", which is to say... vulnerable, resonating, and mildly depressive music. Since the 2005 release of my solo EP "Slippery Rabbits" and "Little Springboard" in 2006 I've played at Rockrgrl Seattle, Halifax Pop Explosion, Rock Can Roll, The Labrador Creative Arts Festival, Peace-a-Chord, and Ladyfest Toronto, and I've opened for lots of touring bands and done a little touring myself. I've been a guest speaker at conferences about d.i.y. and the status of women in music, and I teach d.i.y. punk rock workshops for women now and then. In Montreal I'm working on my next solo album, and playing in a new band of Bryan Webb (of the Constantines), called Harbourcoats.
I'm also a choreographer and interdisciplinary producer. I've acted a bit, I like film acting the best. I want to make films, and I have a knack for editing. For most of the last five years I worked as Newfoundland playwright and comedian Andy Jones' personal assistant and tour manager. I am a freelance writer who has been a regular columnist in a few alt papers, and I am trying to write my first novel. At the moment I'm studying french full time, and after that I'm starting a furniture making program. So yeah...budding musician, budding filmmaker, budding writer, budding carpenter. I'm budding.

new album

I just released a new album. So far feedback has been excellent. The album is under my new performing name SLIPPERY RABBITS and the cd is called LA MARÉE NOIRE. CDs are at Fred's Records now, and the official cd release show is Thursday August 28th at the SHIP. I'll be playing live with backing rabbits Katie Baggs on violin, Victor Lewis on guitars and organs, and Tom Power on bazuki (how *do* you spell that?), brass, and banjo. We're sharing the show with Les Dependents, who are a chilled-out a… Continue

how gay

I went and talked to the director at my school today, after another stupid incident in class. We'd seen an awesome french film, just released but set in the 1960's, where a family totally falls apart after the wife finds out her husband is cheating on her with a guy. She leaves him and the children, and the children are left to sort everything out for themselves, because no one will talk to them about it. It's a film about lack of communication and how sometimes children take care of adults. So… Continue

gay

so i outed myself in class today. I was angry. My teacher put on a bunch of films since it was the last day of class, and #3 was C.R.A.Z.Y., a pretty good little film I'd seen before about a young gay guy trying to deal with being gay in the face of a violently homophobic family, etc etc. So anyway my prof is cool, I like her, she seems pretty with it, right. She introduces the film by saying that it is on the subject of "homosexuality, which for some people in the class might be a subject that… Continue

Sex-Abuse Survivors Urge Each Other to Speak Out

By Alison Bowen - WeNews correspondent

(WOMENSENEWS)--On April 29, a day that the mayor of Asheville, N.C., has declared "Angela Shelton Day," the filmmaker and actress will report her father's abuse of her as a child online and to police.

Shelton, who is also a major voice in convincing victims to open up about their experiences, will do so as part of a nationwide campaign started last month to launch Report IT, a Web site designed to… Continue

Yeah! And great article on you/about you Cherie - really interesting and honest. Have a super night tomorrow at the Ship - I bet you'll pack the place!

Done! Of course I had it all upside down - I simply had to copy the embed code which was right there in front of my face. But at least I finally figured it out. I dragged a photo of you from you MySpace page for the player - send me another if you like and I hear you have a lovely album package (just reading about you in the Scope - nice article and snaps! ) Thanks for your patience my dear. Great music!! xx

Oh god cannot apologize enough for this hassle... On my page, I have a feature at the bottom of my music player, that says 'Edit Playlist' (with a little pencil beside it). So I click on that, and then I have the option, to the right of each of my songs, to 'Edit' (again with the little pencil) or 'Delete'. I click on 'Edit' and I get several options for editing the info and how it can be viewed.... if that isn't working on your page I just don't know and will have to file it under 'more things to work out one of these days!' At least we can hear the songs by visiting your page!!

Hi Cherie - Can you please go back to your upload and make sure you have ticked 'allow people to put this song on their pages' . Otherwise it only plays on your page (and doesn't download into a QT file that I can then put into the Main Page player). Sorry for yet another step! Thanks and love both songs!

Right - all is well now. I had taken the music player off the main page, and that apparently made it disappear from all the individual member pages. But it's back now so off you go.... sorry for all the trouble! But looking forward to hearing your music! cheers, rx

Yes, you emailed me an image for the album cover and that would work again for me to post it into the music player. But to add an image to the blog you have to do that yourself as I can't get into your blog - so just go back to it, click on 'edit post', then paste in a photo right at the top of the blog, by clicking on the little photo icon, then save and publish. As for the mp3 - yeah, upload it to your page and just make sure to tick 'everyone' for who can see it, and then I can feature it in the Main Page player. Thanks!

Obviously everyone is ignoring the fact that it wasn't actually university and I don't think anyone is noticing the film class idea... at the end of the day I think the fact it was a government funded french class is much the same as university - a group of grownups, and this is the intolerance that still exists, in spades, and we need to be reminded....
