Thanks for the comments Pam and Missiz. My fear is that I won't be able to find an audience. I know already that most men and even many women glaze over with boredom at the thought of 'women and politics'. I assume that most judges for film festiv...

I had the pleasure of filming a talk by Stephen Lewis at UNB Saint John a few years ago for an educational series called 80/20; the Developing World. We couldn't use much footage because of time constraints but I made sure we used some of his thou...

I can't wait to see this film! Our lack of representation in policy-making and political leadership is truly depressing and infuriating. This is a very important conversation and I wish you every success with this project.

Thanks for the link. I have another source (which is how I came up with the name for the site in the first place) but this one is better!

Interesting study. Doesn't surprise me much, except that women lie so much more easily than men about what arouses them. Many straight women enjoy well-done movies about gay men, eg. Brokeback Mountain. So perhaps with the chimps, it's the same th...

Profile Information

About Me:
Fulltime filmmaker and writer. Current project: a feature documentary called Menocracy, about how to quickly get more women elected to government in Canada, the UK and the US. No funding, just doing this on my own. My best interview was with former Prime Minister Kim Campbell: lively, smart and eloquent. I've also published a book, With All Her Might; the Life of Gertrude Harding, Militant Suffragette, about my great-aunt. Gert should be a Canadian heroine. I plan to produce a doc about her and eventually to find someone to produce a film (already written) about her most exciting years as a Suffragette.

Need for Quotas for Women Candidates

[this is from my new blog, but I gave myself permission to copy]

I keep hearing politically active people, women included, say "No" to the suggestion of quotas for women candidates in elections. Why are they considered so terrible?

Quotas are one of the key ways that most of the world's leading democracies -- and many smaller ones -- have so many more elected women than we have in Canada, the USA and the UK (Canada is ranked 48th in the world for percentage of elected women). From Sweden to B… Continue

Well I don't know if everyone can read these things. I'm still muddling my way through Facebook. Anyway, these are good ways to network with people across the country. I am in Halifax and loving it here. I haven't had much time to take in the Atlantic film Festival because I was in Fredericton for Harvest Jazz & blues. There are some things I want to take in on the weekend, however.
CBC Radio's, The Current is doing an item on Will and his involvement in politics if you get a chance to listen in tomorrow morning after the 8:30 news.
Hope all is well. Allison

HOUSEKEEPING

Our name was inspired by a survey of elected women in governments worldwide showing Canada in the disappointing position of #48. And over the past two years we've dropped to 50 and risen to 47....
We're a politically motivated, artistically driven platform for feminists interested in challenging the status quo.
We invite filmmakers, artists and activists to express themselves and contribute their art and ideas.
We're committed to showcasing female artists and to connecting with women around the world.
We believe we have a responsibility to support womens' struggle for human rights and equality globally.
We also believe in using art and entertainment to mix it up in the political world.
Our logo is by young Newfoundland artist Isabelle Riche. Welcome!
Please drop me a line here, anytime!
Cheers, Rosemary
