Eva Madden-Hagen Women Who Would Have Better and More Interesting Careers If They Were Men

This is a great article by script-writer Celery, about women in film. Her article also inspired a great discussion. Definitely worth checking out! Lois Brown knee surgery for women

Interestingly enough when I went o the CBC site to read their reporting on the doctors recommending knee replacement surgery less often for women, in this case, there was alot of poo-pooing of the study in the comments. Of course, CBC forgot to mention that we already know that men have knee replacement surgery more often than women, despite the fact that women are more likely to have arthritis. What this study was mostly likely attempting to do is provide insight into why more men get knee surg… Continue

Lois Brown Whats good for a woman is twice as good for a man - see this article I stumbed on

Study finds doctors twice as likely to recommend replacement surgery for men as women MONDAY, March 10 (HealthDay News) -- Women with knee pain are less likely than men to be recommended for total knee replacement surgery, says a Canadian study that suggests gender bias may be a factor. The University of Toronto study included a woman and a man with moderate knee osteoarthritis (OA) who reported the same pain symptoms and sought assessments from 67 doctors (38 family physicians and 29 orthoped… Continue

Lois Brown more blogetting

When I wrote my blogette on H1N1 (shorter than a blog, longer than a tweet) - I was sorta saying it's not a monster - but then I reread what I wrote and it's doesn't sound very uplifting at all. Well, I am recupperated now for the most part - and it was a long annoying flu, but it wasn't the worst flu I have had. Olivia got through it easily. Anyway, seems like the fear has abated and were on to new crazy things of which to be afraid. The monsters in the urban dark. Continue

FilmNet Dress to Regress

Considering that I put on weird clothes and makeup for the camera on a regular basis, it’s weird that I have never actually dressed up for Halloween. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just… never worked out. It was fun to hear that this year at least a couple of people braved parties dressed as Captain Disillusion. Alas, I think people kept asking them if they’re “T-1000 on crack”… But I do have a perfect costume in mind for when I finally get around to celebrating Halloween properly, one of… Continue

Lois Brown H1N1

I am very sick with the flu. I am pretty sure it's H1N1. It's a really, really bad flu - but I have had just as bad with a much worse cough. The most worrisome symptom, (since I am not throwing-up - I rarely do - unless drinking), is the heaviness on the lungs. Strange cause there is no signs of congestion, yet I have a heavy congested feeling on the lungs, and I started feeling that almost immediately. In fact, I was contemplating not sleeping at all in case I had respiratory failure - that's h… Continue

Jacqueline Hynes Tick tock, tick tock, what the hell is with this biological clock?!

I'd like to open up the floor to any and all women who might have something to say about the female biological clock. I'm 28 years old and seem to be experiencing what I thought was only a myth! It's become a running joke amongst my friends and I, but despite the laughter, there's a real physical and emotional element that's confusing and frustrating to deal with. Is this something everyone goes through? Is it different for all? Is it our body telling us our time is running out? What is this inc… Continue

Lois Brown The St. John's International Women's Film Festival

Started before opening night, I met with Carol Whiteman - the amazing and beautiful Carol Whiteman. Opening night was lovely. From Noreen's wonderful speech and funny quips (Clyde Wolverine Jackman) to the engaging imagery of Love and Savagery. I also had a wonderful time at the reception. Last night I saw some films at the Masonic Temple - after going to the Majestic by mistake. While the sound at the Masonic was crap (being honest), the films were beautiful and of such a high quality. Really w… Continue

Jacqueline Hynes Goodbye Facebook

Goodbye Facebook...Sort of. I can reactivate my account any time, friends can still tag photos of me and my information will forever float in the embrace of Facebook cyberspace. As I sat on the Metrobus this past Friday during a heavy Newfoundland downpour, I opened up my laptop and took the few nervous steps of cutting myself out of the mega social network. I was now out of the Facebook loop forever (sort of). I'd been wanting to get off the crack-book for about a year now, prepping myself with… Continue

Jacqueline Hynes Impromtu Manifesto for overcoming the increasingly negative image for women-please feel free to add your own

I was reading a post 'female chauvinism' and I felt so frustrated and I had to do something...And these are personal statements, no judgment of other women's preferences intended. 1. I will NEVER get a Brazilian wax. 2. I will NEVER wear a thong. 3. I will not endorse negative stereotypes of women in the form of playboy shirts etc. 4. I will not purchase trash magazines 5. I will blog on here more often 6. I will challenge the women in my life 7. I WILL go outside without makeup and feel beauti… Continue

Diana Daly Being an Immigrant

well, not really, but an immigrant to Quebec. This year has truly opened my eyes to how hard it is to pick up your life and move to a new place with a new language. It takes real guts. It takes so much humility and drive to learn a new language and to try and find connections with people so different from you. Well, actually, the connections come pretty easy once you have a way of communicating. The women in my French class are all so different and amazing in their own way. It has really put alo… Continue

Rosemary House Women At Risk

Bob Herbert comments on the recent killing of three Pennsylvania women by a man who hated women and wanted them dead. Herbert's analysis is fearless: "We profess to being shocked at one or another of these outlandish crimes, but the shock wears off quickly in an environment in which the rape, murder and humiliation of females is not only a staple of the news, but an important cornerstone of the nation's entertainment. We have become so accustomed to living in a society saturated with misogyny th… Continue

Jacqueline Hynes Making small choices for my greater good

I gave up drinking quite naturally over the past year...It just happened. I started to get up early in the mornings, filling my weekends with art projects, with love, with things that seemed to get in the way of drinking. And I needed to do that and was glad it happened so naturally. These days, I find myself drinking a little more, not often, but when I do it's excessive and I feel out of control. I haven't ruined my life or anyone elses for that matter, but I am all too familiar with the early… Continue

Diana Daly ROCK CAMP FOR GIRLS TOMORROW NIGHT IN MONTREAL

Come out, come out wherever you are (in Montreal)! This is a very excellent event happening in my fair city, which our friend Cherie Pyne is a part of (thank goodness). The show is tomorrow night and I am posting the link for you to see more information. All I know is that, as of now, there is a 9 year old drummer who only comes up to Cherie's knee and she rules on her kit! I can't wait to hear what these girls have to play. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=135644770010&ref=nf lots o… Continue

The 48th Parallel Project is A ROCK ISLAND PRODUCTION.

HOUSEKEEPING

Our name was inspired by a survey of elected women in governments worldwide showing Canada in the disappointing position of #48. And over the past two years we've dropped to 50 and risen to 47....
We're a politically motivated, artistically driven platform for feminists interested in challenging the status quo.
We invite filmmakers, artists and activists to express themselves and contribute their art and ideas.
We're committed to showcasing female artists and to connecting with women around the world.
We believe we have a responsibility to support womens' struggle for human rights and equality globally.
We also believe in using art and entertainment to mix it up in the political world.
Our logo is by young Newfoundland artist Isabelle Riche. Welcome!
Please drop me a line here, anytime!
Cheers, Rosemary
